Review

“A brilliant blend between the world of Firefly and the whirlwind destruction of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . . . breathtakingly paced . . . a great jumping off point for people only familiar with the movies to dive into some books set in the universe.”—Big Shiny Robot

“Honor Among Thieves felt very ‘vintage.’ . . . It nailed the classic Star Wars vibe in a way I haven’t experienced in a long time.”—Making Star Wars

“The Han in this book is a natural fit with the Han we all know and love. Best of all, they toss him into a series of fun adventures with equally great characters.”—Roqoo Depot

“One of the best Star Wars novels I’ve ever read.”—Knights’ Archive

“Absolutely [captures] the magic of Star Wars and the era it’s aiming for.”—Jedi News (UK)

“[The] most pleasurable ‘Classic Trilogy’ Star Wars reading in a long time . . . With masterful pacing and witty, descriptive dialogue, [Honor Among Thieves is] fun to read from start to finish. Adding a complexity of thought and action to a classic character like Han will satisfy those looking to indulge a deeper side.”—TheForce.net

“James S. A. Corey manages to tell a delightful tale filled with a fun plot, entertaining characters, and great descriptions that draw you in and bring the world to life. Fans of all sorts are sure to enjoy Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves.”—EUCantina.net

“If you like Han Solo stories or simply that mixture of action and banter that filled the Original Trilogy than you won’t want to miss Honor Among Thieves, it is one of the funnest Expanded Universe novels I have read in some time.”—Lightsaber Rattling

“Han’s voice can be rather tricky for writers to truly nail but it’s absolutely spot on here.  Leia’s characterization has depth to it that not every writer gets and I particularly enjoyed watching Han’s slow realization that he’s not quite as different from the Rebels as he might have previously thought.  Even Luke and Wedge who admittedly don’t get tons of page time, give off the right character vibes especially given the time period. . . . Strong characterization and an enjoyable storyline put the latest Expanded Universe addition solidly in the ‘give it a read’ category for just about everyone interested.”—Tosche Station

“This is a book that needs only knowledge of the movies to follow. If you’re a fan of Han Solo, or Princess Leia, or just space adventures in general, get on it.”—Fantasy Review Barn

Honor Among Thieves, by James S.A. Corey, is the second book in the Empire and Rebellion series, which is loosely tied together and takes place between A New Hope (Star Wars) and The Empire Strikes Back. I’ve read several of the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels and had mixed results, but I really enjoyed this book.

The main reason I liked Honor Among Thieves is the time period it takes place in. A New Hope was my first movie, and I have an affinity for the characters from the original trilogy. While Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker have roles in this story, the point of view character is Han Solo. Corey does a fantastic job of capturing Han’s voice and personality from the original Star Wars. Han is still questioning his involvement with the Rebel Alliance, and is full of quick one-liners and sarcastic remarks. Han’s relationship with Chewbacca is also on display, and it strikes the right chords as the two interact with each other. There are several references to Han’s past, as well, further fleshing out his character.

As for the story itself, it was entertaining. Han Solo and Chewbacca are on a mission to retrieve a Rebel spy, Scarlet Hark, and bring her and the sensitive information she has discovered back to the Rebel fleet. Unfortunately, someone got to the data first and Hark refuses to leave without it. Solo, Chewbacca, and Hark then begin the process of tracking down and uncovering the data. Along the way, Han encounters an old colleague who is determined to take him to Jabba the Hutt and claim the bounty on Han’s head. There is a rendezvous with Leia, several encounters with Star Destroyers, and a visit to an unexplored planet.

New characters like Scarlet Hark and Baasen Ray only serve to add depth to the story.
Honor Among Thieves is one of those great Star Wars books that stays true to the time in which it is written - without overwriting characters or the SW Universe. This really is a long awaited story giving Han Solo's perspective in the early years of dealing with the Alliance.

Plot: The Death Star is destroyed but the Alliance is still precarious. Leia sends Han Solo out on a mission to rescue a spy deep in Imperial territory. But that spy has her own agenda before helping the Alliance and she will drag Solo across worlds in order to accomplish her own mission.

First and foremost: these characters feel real to Episode IV. Their interaction, dialogue, everything is authentic. Luke is still brash and boyish, and Han is amusingly uncomfortable in diplomatic high society environments. As well, Han's introspection feels authentic for a person in his situation. The banter between the characters is quite fun (yes, perhaps a bit contrived at times but worth it!). As an example, every time something goes wrong, everyone looks toward Han first and blames him. But Chewbacca is woefully underused and spends most of the time left on the ship as Han dashes off to adventure.

This book introduces a new character, Scarlett. She's fun if a bit two dimensional and unfortunately we never do learn much about her. She was the one uneven character - seeming to slip between being a superspy to quite mortal often. But kudos to the authors for resisting the temptation to make her a love interest, even when there were many opportunities to do so.

The middle part of the book is the strongest because it is in that section we get all the Han character development instead of action. But there is a lot of good action throughout the book - perhaps even too much.
