In general this is a pretty useful way of getting into the subject.
Unlike many Dummies books the author doesnt overwork the sick jokes department, and the text reads like a breeze for beginners (well semi-beginners) like me.
The Kindle edition is quite readable and the diagrams come across ok.

I just want to point out that the text is sometimes confusing and I will give an example.
In chapter 3 the author goes to pains to distinguish between hubs and switches. Then he introduces the notion of daisy chaining swiches together and says "You can daisy chain no more than three switches together". On the very same line he writes "If you have more computers
than 3 hubs can accommodate, don't panic. For a small additional cost, you can purchase hubs that have a BNC connection on the back. Then
you can string the hubs together using thinnet cable. The three hub limit doesnt apply when you use thinnet cable to connect the hubs."

Hey wait on, Mr Lowe, you've just taken the pain to explain that hubs and switches are different, and then you go off in a paragraph using the terms in an almost interchangeable way.
Either that's a typo, or sime cut and paste mistake or very clumsy writing. In any case it leads to confusion and the editor ought to have caught sight of it.

got this as an extra help for a class that I am taking, great all in one book. It covers way more than I can ever learn, so I will always have this as a reference tool for anything in the future.
