Praise for The Walking Dead: The Road to Woodbury:
“An entertaining read.” —ComicBookMovie.com
“The novel fleshes out . . . backstories and connects them, giving depth to people who remained largely mysteries in the comic books. For comic book readers, the novel is full of easter eggs and surprise connections, making it not only entertaining, but necessarily for filling in the gaps left by the comic books . . . ‘The Road to Woodbury’ is an essential read for any fan of ‘The Walking Dead’.” —Examiner.com
Praise for The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor:
“An excellent companion to the The Walking Dead comic books. The story is enriched by the novel format, and the characterization of the series' most hated villain is something no fan will want to miss.”
—Examiner.com
“This book stands alone and is a compelling read for fans of the series or just fans of zombies. Watch out though, because once you get a taste of the particular Kirkman brand of zombie mayhem, catching up on past issues is just around the corner.”
—The Ossuary
“The story makes a great novel. You'll get sucked in and can easily visualize everything that is happening. It's simply a great read.”
—Comicvine.com
“It takes great advantage of the literary medium in a way that most tie-in books would not.”
—TVOverMind.com
“Not for the faint of heart, this book runs on pressure-cooker suspense, graphically described bloodshed, and dark acts of brutality...This riveting character study adds a new dimension to the oeuvre by fleshing out established characters and plot lines.”
—School Library Journal

For four, long agonizing books, we've been subjected to bloated prose and directionless characters. I rode the ride all the way to the end because I felt obligated to it. I'm a pretty big Walking Dead enthusiast and fan and I've been more than generous to try the many adaptations of the source material (the show, the game, among others). The Walking Dead is not a hard story to write or to understand, but it must be mighty difficult to get through Bonansinga's thick skull.
The bulk of this "novel" dwells on describing the gory details of each walker kill and character death. I'm not offended by gore at all, but it gets very old very quickly. Bonansinga has killed walkers the same way for four straight books. Sometimes the descriptions are verbatim to ones in previous novels. It's lazy writing and it ignores what has made The Walking Dead popular and relevant: the human emotion and condition when all they know is lost.
If you're a comic reader, the last two novels are of no surprise or value. You get more insight to Lilly and Bob Stookey (amongst other cannon fodder), but ultimately, it's inconsequential. "The Road to Woodbury" fleshed those guys out VERY well with the novel series' finest book. The final two novels, however, push them back into the background (since they didn't appear prominently during the "battle arc").
One of the few things this series does right is give Lilly a reason for (is this really a SPOILER by now?) killing The Governor. I won't spoil that, but it gave a necessary twist that the comic series lacked.
The only part that any comic fan should be subjected to is chapters 17 and beyond. The mini-narrative that plays out for Lilly post-prison is both interesting and refreshing.
